Packing and Travelling- London- Winter Edition

The DLR in London

I have quite a busy month of December and a very important thing for me is my trip to London. Knowing that I'm not able to over-pack and that I have to go through airport security I chose to pack wisely. Here is how I did it:

Essentials:
this is more of a must list of things you need when travelling

  • Passport- I know that if you're from the EU and going to the UK you might be able to pass with your ID only but again, passports still exist for a reason so you might want to have one with you
  • Telephone and Carriers: You need to speak to people home so you take your phone with you. Ok, just be sure to check what carriers there are in the respective country as I suppose you don't want a few hundred dollars worth of telephone bills. Also, make sure you have an adapter.
  • Money in the local currency
  • Maps and plans
  • A dictionary: if you're travelling to a country you don't know the language of you might want to consider this just in case
  • A change outfit and essential toiletries: if you have hold luggage
Then, it's time to organize based on what you'll have with you: I had a relatively big backpack and my handbag.

The big backpack:
I have an O'Neill one (the best backpack ever, if you ask me; I've had it for at least 5 years and it's still going strong)
I used this one for the main thing I needed: clothes, toiletries, lingerie, socks, cables.
As I was staying in London for about 5 days I packed about 4 shirts/sweaters and had 2 pairs of pants in my bag and one outfit plus my coat on. I took no extra shoes: I only had my long leather boots on  ( I would suggest something you can easily take off as some airports require you to walk through security without shoes on). My tip for packing with limited space would be to leave out the most chunkier sweaters and instead pair shirts with the coat that you're wearing: the sweaters that I had with me were good enough to keep warm but did not take up all the space. Also, I took a thin undershirt which proved to be a wise choice: I could wear something more fashionable without freezing to death.
Socks and lingerie at the bottom. Then clothes. Then a clear bag with my toiletries.
One thing which you have to be careful about when travelling by airplane is how much you are allowed to carry when it comes to liquids and sprays.  The airport I left from had no restriction to the number of clear bags, only to the number of bottles of liquids( usually 10 bottles of no more that 100 ml but that depends so I suggest you just check). However, when I left London I was told I get to carry only 1 clear bag and I had the same restriction for the number of bottles.

My clear bag:
These you can have or purchase from the airport (you might get them for free as well)
I didn't take toothpaste and toothbrush or deodorant and shampoo as I got those when I arrived in London( the Boots mini section is heaven).
I only had:
Makeup: my YSL Touche Eclat, Chanel Poudre Universelle, Eyebrow Powder(can't remember the brand), MAC Lip gloss and Dior mascara
Skincare: My Clarins Oil Treatment-the biggest mistake: it somehow managed to get out and flood almost the entire clear bag when I got home( next time I will transfer it to another container); Chanel HydraBeauty small container, Lancome Eau Micellaire
Medicine: the usual
As for tools I only took my eyebrow brush and eyelash curler.
No perfume- I purchased my Christmas gift while in London.

Cables and my toiletries bag were placed on top of my clothes as I had to get the bag out for security check.

My handbag:
I had my essentials mentioned above together with my plane tickets, a medical journal to read on the plane, headphones and a bottle of water.

Obviously, the hardest part was getting all my clothes in my backpack considering that I could not take tank tops with me. Also, I would recommend taking a bag which you can carry by yourself. And yes, this is a tip as I've seen people choose the wrong backpack and then struggling to go through the airport.

All in all, this is everything I could think of right now. If I remember a few things along the way I might update this post or mention things in my future ones.
